Stainless Steel Braided Hoses are Armor Tubes for Higher Pressures

As a leading company in tube & hose technology, RCT offers stainless steel braided conduits as armor tubes, with the material consisting of elastomeric plastics, both soft and hard plastics, that are stainless steel braided. This includes FPM/FKM lines, Viton® tubing, THOMAFLUOR pipes, which are equipped as pressure conduits with a steel wire braid. These armor products can be used in temperature ranges from -25 °C to +180 °C.

Armor Tubes: Stability for the Highest Pressures

In high-pressure applications in technical fields, pressures of up to 130 bar occur. In addition to these continuous, peak, and alternating pressure loads, thermal and mechanical stresses may occur. Under such extreme conditions, robust materials are required to prevent bursting. As a leading company in hose technology, RCT offers a wide range of stainless steel braided pressure hoses specifically for this range of applications.

In these specialty products, the inner material is made of elastomers/soft plastics or hard plastics, which are braided with steel wire for better resistance to high pressures. The external steel mesh gives these high-pressure conduits very high mechanical strength. Bending, friction fatigue, and crushing can thus be almost completely avoided.

Applications and Uses of Stainless Steel Braided NBR and FPM/FKM Tubing

The application areas of stainless steel braided pressure lines made of FPM/FKM and Viton® include the pharmaceutical industry, the petroleum industry, process technology, and chemical engineering. NBR tubes or pressure pipes made of nitrile rubber in their steel wire braided variants are used as low-pressure or high-pressure conduits.

The stainless steel braided pressure and armor tubes are used for transporting dyes and as hydraulic lines (according to DIN 73379). They are proven suitable for conveying glycol-based mineral oils, lubricants, vegetable and animal oils, as well as diluted acids and bases.

The low-pressure conduits can be used in a temperature range from -30 °C to +90 °C. The high-pressure tubes are even suitable for a temperature spectrum from -60 °C to +260 °C. Both products are specifically designed for use as fuel lines or tubing for gasoline. Certification as a fuel-resistant chemical and hydraulic tubing according to DIN 73379 was carried out for this purpose. For more information on fuel conduits and corresponding certifications, see our magazine article Hoses for Fuels.

PTFE Pipes for Particularly Demanding Operating Conditions

The group of steel wire braided high-temperature conduits also includes PTFE tubing, such as the high-temperature pipe made of PTFE. These stainless steel braided high-temperature lines are most commonly used because of their high gas tightness as gas transport tubes in high-temperature areas in chemical engineering. To better meet the needs of users, RCT offers this high-temperature product with single and double braiding. High-pressure pipes made of PTFE are characterized by high gas tightness. The inner core of the stainless steel braided high-temperature tubes is FDA-compliant and BfR-compliant and also meets the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia. These PTFE steel wire coated or braided armor conduits are thus food-safe.

The working temperature of the stainless steel coated chemical hoses has been determined to be -60 °C to +260 °C. The pressure load, that is, the maximum operating pressure, is between 160 bar and 330 bar, depending on the type of stainless steel braided armor tube and its dimensions (based on +20 °C). The anti-adhesive properties of the PTFE inner core also make the stainless steel braided specialty products available at Reichelt Chemietechnik the first choice for pressure and suction applications in the field of food processing.

Braided Tubes with Fixed Connection Systems

Since connecting steel wire braided high-pressure lines to gas piping or fluidic systems is significantly more complex than with simple plastic pipes, Reichelt Chemietechnik also offers these with suitable end pieces and connectors, such as stainless steel tubing or corrugated tubes with pre-assembled connections.

The most common are threaded connections, which on one hand carry a hex nut with an external stainless steel thread (hard soldered) and on the other hand a conically sealing stainless steel fitting with an internal thread (hard soldered). Both connections are equipped with standardized (DIN 2999, ISO 7/1) Whitworth pipe threads. Also of high practical value are the steel wire braided hydraulic conduits, which are equipped with small flanges (acc. DIN 28403). These pressure tubes designed for vacuum applications are certified according to EN 10204 /DIN 50049 (helium leak test) and ultrasonically cleaned.

The third available connection type is the double-sided welded stainless steel pipe end. The pipe ends can be adapted with common tube & hose connectors, such as cutting ring connections. It is important to note that the steel braiding represents an electrically conductive connection.
