The O-Ring as Pharmaceutical Seals and Laboratory Seals

As a specialist in high-quality seals, Reichelt Chemietechnik manufactures and offers a wide range of pharmaceutical O-rings in both inch and metric sizes. The sealing rings made of plastics and rubber available from us are offered in the following materials:

  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene)
  • FEP (Fluoroethylene Propylene)
  • NBR (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber, Perbunan®)
  • FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer)
  • HNBR (Hydrogenated Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber)
  • FKM/FPM (Fluoroelastomer)
  • PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene, THOMAFLON)
  • Silicone

Overview of Seals Made from Different Materials

EPDM Seal

Our range includes EPDM O-rings. They are made from this material are required for the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, as well as for the petrochemical industry, chemical process technology, and mechanical engineering. They comply with the European Pharmacopoeia requirements and are therefore BfR and FDA compliant.

They are also used in drinking water treatment, especially for the production of pharmaceutical water, as they are DVGW and KTW approved. The Shore hardness A is 75° according to DIN 53505, and the operating temperature ranges from -40 °C to +150 °C for air and -40 °C to +180 °C for water and steam.

FEP and FKM

Pharmaceutical seals with an FKM core and an FEP coating are almost resistant to all chemicals, polar media, steam, concentrated acids, oxidizing media, and organic solvents. They comply with the European Pharmacopoeia requirements. Moreover, FEP-coated O-rings are BfR and FDA compliant. They are also virtually gas-tight, indicating low permeability for this ring variant. The Shore hardness A for these seals is 75° according to DIN 53505. They are suitable for operating temperatures ranging from -20 °C to +200 °C. Thus, pharmaceutical seals are high-performance seals.

FEP and Silicone

Reichelt Chemietechnik also presents FEP-coated silicone O-rings as seals. The core is made of coated silicone (vinyl-methyl silicone rubber). This product is transparent and has a Shore hardness A of 70° according to DIN 53505. They are suitable for operating temperatures from -60 °C to +200 °C. Therefore, these seals are high-temperature resistant and high-performance.

NBR

NBR O-rings are delivered and manufactured in metric and inch sizes. Pharmaceutical seals find their use in chemical process technology, process engineering, mechanical engineering, but also in the petrochemical and chemical industries. However, they are preferred in the food industry and pharmaceutical technology. The ring products available from us comply with the European Pharmacopoeia requirements and are also FDA and BfR compliant. They are particularly resistant to oils, fuels, vegetable and animal oils, silicones, as well as diluted acids and bases.

The operating temperature of NBR O-rings is given as -20 °C to +100 °C, with a Shore hardness A of 70° according to DIN 53505. DVGW and KTW-compliant seals made from this material are also suitable for drinking water supply, hospital technology, and pharmaceutical water production.

Silicone

Silicone rings are highly durable as seals. Such rings are considered high-performance seals configured for temperatures from -55 °C to +200 °C. They have a Shore hardness A of 70° according to DIN 53505. These rings are resistant to hot air, heat, ozone, weather, and aging.

FKM Pharmaceutical seals made from FKM are also high-performance seals used in process engineering, the pharmaceutical industry, petrochemical industry, as well as the food industry. O-rings made from FKM material are also suitable for the chemical industry.

These sealing rings comply with the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia and are FDA and BfR compliant. They are highly temperature-resistant, resistant to aging, weather, ozone, and exhibit extremely high resistance to fats, oils, mineral oils, fuels, animal and vegetable fats, as well as aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, hydraulic fluids, essential oils, and amines. Notably, these rings have great gas-tightness, and permeability is almost negligible. FKM O-rings are colored red, and their Shore hardness A is 75° according to DIN 53505. The operating temperature for such a ring ranges from -15 °C to +200 °C.

FFKM

FFKM O-rings were specially developed for the pharmaceutical and food industries. The seals are FDA compliant and comply with the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia. The Shore hardness A is 75° according to DIN 53505 for such rings.

Due to their high-temperature resistance, FFKM sealing rings are considered high-temperature seals for temperature ranges from -10 °C to +230 °C, with pharmaceutical seals being able to withstand short-term temperatures of up to +260 °C. The chemical resistance of FFKM O-rings is virtually unlimited, both to inorganic and organic media.
